Artorius

The name Artorius has its origins in the ancient Brittonic language, spoken in what is now parts of Great Britain and France during the Iron Age and Roman period. It is derived from the Brittonic elements "artos" meaning bear and the suffix "-rios" meaning someone associated with or like. So the original meaning was likely "bear-man" or "bear-warrior".

The name is first recorded in the 5th-6th century CE, referring to the legendary British leader known as King Arthur. The earliest literary reference is found in the 9th century historical work Historia Brittonum which mentions "Arthur the War Leader" (Artorius dux bellorum). Later medieval writers like Geoffrey of Monmouth in the 12th century cemented the Latinized spelling Artorius in European mythology and literature about the Arthurian legends.

One of the earliest recorded individuals named Artorius was a 6th century Briton known as Artorius, King of Dyfed in southwest Wales. He lived around 550 CE and fought against the Anglo-Saxon invaders. The French historian Gildas wrote about his military leadership against the Saxons.

Another early bearer was Artorius, a Briton military commander who lived around 580 CE. He successfully defended the region of Bath from Anglo-Saxon conquest according to Bede's Ecclesiastical History. Not much else is known about his life.

In the late 6th century, there was a Bishop of Avranches in France named Artorius who attended church councils around 585-590 CE. He helped establish Christianity in the region after the fall of Roman rule.

Around 671 CE, an Abbott of the monastery of Rebais near Paris named Artorius lived during the Merovingian period. He made religious reforms and expanded the monastery's lands and influence.

The Welsh bishop and historian Artorius lived in the late 8th century, writing an important chronicle documenting the history of Britons battling Anglo-Saxon invaders between 685-810 CE. His manuscript De Excidio Brittaniae provides invaluable information about post-Roman Britain.
