Dimitrije

Dimitrije is a masculine given name with origins in the Greek language. It is derived from the Greek name Demetrios, which itself derives from the name of the ancient Greek goddess Demeter, the goddess of agriculture, grain, and fertility. The name Dimitrije is most commonly found in Slavic cultures, particularly those of Orthodox Christian heritage.

The name Demetrios has a long history, dating back to ancient Greece. It appears in various ancient texts and records, including works by the ancient Greek historian Plutarch. One of the earliest recorded bearers of the name was Demetrius I Poliorcetes, a king of Macedon who lived from 336 to 283 BC.

In the Christian tradition, Saint Demetrius of Thessalonica, a 3rd-century martyr and saint, is perhaps the most well-known bearer of the name. His feast day is celebrated on October 26th in the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church.

Throughout history, there have been several notable figures named Dimitrije or its variants. One of the earliest recorded was Dimitrije Nemanjić, a 13th-century Serbian prince and the son of Stefan Nemanja, the founder of the Nemanjić dynasty. Another was Dimitrije Avramović, a 15th-century Serbian writer and diplomat who served as a secretary to the Despot of Serbia, Đurađ Branković.

In more recent times, notable bearers of the name include Dimitrije Ljotić, a Serbian politician and founder of the Yugoslav National Movement (Zbor) who lived from 1891 to 1945. Dimitrije Mitrinović, a 20th-century Serbian poet and diplomat, was born in 1888 and died in 1953.

Dimitrije Rupel, a Slovenian politician and diplomat, served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovenia from 2000 to 2008. He was born in 1946 and is still living today.
