Knoxley

The name Knoxley is of English origin, first appearing in the late 16th century. It is derived from the Old English words "cnoc" meaning hill or hillock, and "leah" meaning a meadow or clearing. This suggests the name may have originally referred to a person living in a meadow or clearing near a hill.

The earliest recorded use of the name Knoxley can be found in parish records from the village of Knoxley in Warwickshire, England, dating back to 1587. It is believed this small village may have been the birthplace of the name.

In 1612, a Knoxley Thompkins was listed as a landowner in the county of Gloucestershire. This is one of the first instances of the name appearing in historical records outside of its suspected place of origin.

During the English Civil War in the 1640s, a Puritan soldier named Knoxley Wainwright fought for the Parliamentarian forces against King Charles I. He is mentioned in several accounts of the Battle of Naseby in 1645.

A renowned botanist from the 18th century bore the name Knoxley Hawthorne. He is credited with discovering and cataloging over 200 new species of plants found in the British colonies of North America between 1755 and 1782.
