Tadgh

Tadgh is a masculine given name of Irish origin, derived from the Old Irish word "togach" meaning "poet" or "philosopher." The name has been in use since ancient times in Ireland, with its earliest recorded spelling appearing as "Tadhg" in Medieval Irish manuscripts.

The name Tadgh is closely associated with Irish mythology and literature. In the epic tales of the Ulster Cycle, one of the most prominent characters is Tadg mac Nuadat, a legendary king of Munster. Tadg mac Céin, a renowned poet and scholar of the 6th century, is also a notable figure associated with this name.

One of the earliest recorded individuals bearing the name Tadgh was Tadg Mór Ua Cellaigh (died 1023), the King of Uí Maine, a kingdom in what is now County Galway, Ireland. Another historically significant Tadgh was Tadg Ó Briain (c. 1009–1086), the King of Munster and a key figure in the wars against the Norse and Anglo-Norman invaders.

In the 12th century, Tadg Óg Ó Briain (c. 1144–1207) was a notable Irish King of Thomond and a prominent ally of the High King of Ireland, Ruaidri Ua Conchobair. Centuries later, Tadhg Dall Ó Huiginn (c. 1550–1591) was a renowned Irish poet and historian who composed works in both Irish and Latin.

Tadhg Gaelach Ó Súilleabháin (c. 1670–1750) was an Irish military leader and Jacobite who fought in the Williamite War in Ireland and the War of the Spanish Succession. He is remembered for his heroic defense of Limerick against the forces of William of Orange.

While the name Tadgh has deep historical roots in Ireland, it has also been adopted in other English-speaking countries, particularly among those with Irish ancestry. However, its usage has remained relatively uncommon outside of Ireland and Irish diasporic communities.
