The name Tendai originates from the Shingon Buddhist sect in Japan, which was founded in the early 9th century AD by the monk Kūkai. Tendai is derived from the Chinese words "Tian Tai," meaning "heavenly terrace" or "celestial platform." This refers to the Tiantai Mountains in eastern China, where the influential Tiantai Buddhist school was established.
