Meaning
What does Addeline mean?
Addeline is an English feminine given name that originated from the French name Adeline, which in turn derived from the Germanic name Adalheidis. Adalheidis was composed of the Germanic elements "adal" meaning "noble" and "heid" meaning "kind, sort, or type". The name became popular in France during the Middle Ages and eventually made its way to England with the French Normans.
In the 9th century, Adalheidis was the name of a Carolingian princess and daughter of the Frankish King Pepin of Italy. She lived from around 850 to 901 AD. Another early bearer of the name was Saint Adeline, a 7th-century French nun and abbess who founded the Abbey of Trévaux in the Cévennes region of France.
The earliest recorded examples of the English spelling "Addeline" date back to the late 16th century. One notable bearer of this spelling was Addeline Crofton (c. 1594 - 1675), an English writer and translator who published several works on theology and philosophy during the 17th century.
Throughout history, there have been several famous women named Addeline or variations of the name. Adeline Genée (1878 - 1970) was a Danish ballet dancer and choreographer who helped establish the British style of ballet in the early 20th century. Adeline Virginia Woolf (1882 - 1941) was a British author and one of the foremost modernist writers of the 20th century.
Adeline Alma Caldewey (1872 - 1957) was an American artist and educator known for her intricate etchings and drypoint prints. Adeline Dutton Train Whitney (1824 - 1906) was an American poet, author, and abolitionist who was active in the women's rights movement and co-founded the Boston Authors Club.
Finally, Adeline Ritchie (1870 - 1957) was a Scottish artist and printmaker best known for her etchings and drypoint prints depicting landscapes and rural scenes from Scotland and France.
