Neighbourhood profile for Jines

Modern surname records can be compared with neighbourhood classifications. For Jines, this points to the kinds of places where the surname is most concentrated today.

These neighbourhood labels describe areas, not individual people. They are useful because surnames often cluster through family history, migration, housing patterns and local work. A surname can be strongest in one type of neighbourhood even when people with that name live across the country.

The UK classification gives the national picture. The London classification is more specific to the capital, where housing, age profile, tenure and population mix can look quite different from the rest of the UK.

Meaning and origin of Jines

The surname Jines is believed to have originated in England during the medieval period. It is thought to be a variant spelling of the more common name Jones, which itself is derived from the personal name John. The earliest recorded instances of the Jines spelling date back to the 13th century in parish records from the county of Yorkshire.

One of the earliest known bearers of the Jines name was Sir Robert Jines, a knight who fought alongside King Edward III in the Battle of Crécy during the Hundred Years' War in 1346. Records show he was granted lands in Lincolnshire for his service. The name can also be found in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it appears as "Gines" in entries from Warwickshire and Gloucestershire.

In the 15th century, the Jines family established itself in the village of Twyford, Hampshire, where they were prominent landowners and gentry. Notable members from this lineage include William Jines (1472-1543), who served as a member of parliament for Winchester, and his son Thomas Jines (1504-1572), a wealthy merchant and alderman of the city of London.

During the English Civil War in the 17th century, a Captain John Jines fought for the Parliamentarian forces under Oliver Cromwell. He is recorded as having participated in the Siege of Reading in 1643. Another individual of note from this era is the poet and playwright Robert Jines (1605-1678), whose works include the play "The Unfortunate Lovers" published in 1640.

Moving into the 18th century, the name appears in various records associated with the villages of Kenilworth in Warwickshire and Wootton Bassett in Wiltshire. A prominent figure was Sir Edward Jines (1720-1792), a wealthy landowner and Member of Parliament for Cricklade. The Jines family coat of arms from this period depicts three gold griffins on a red field.
