Neighbourhood profile for Phillippo

Modern surname records can be compared with neighbourhood classifications. For Phillippo, this points to the kinds of places where the surname is most concentrated today.

These neighbourhood labels describe areas, not individual people. They are useful because surnames often cluster through family history, migration, housing patterns and local work. A surname can be strongest in one type of neighbourhood even when people with that name live across the country.

The UK classification gives the national picture. The London classification is more specific to the capital, where housing, age profile, tenure and population mix can look quite different from the rest of the UK.

Meaning and origin of Phillippo

The surname Phillippo originated in Sicily, Italy in the late 12th century. It is derived from the Greek name Philippos, which means "lover of horses." The name first appeared in written records in the town of Palermo during the reign of the Norman kings of Sicily.

During the Middle Ages, the Phillippo family held land and titles in the Sicilian provinces of Palermo and Messina. Several members of the family served as knights and courtiers to the Norman and later Aragonese kings of Sicily. The name can be found in various medieval charters and land grants from the 13th and 14th centuries.

One of the earliest recorded individuals with the surname Phillippo was Ruggero Phillippo, a knight who fought alongside King Roger II of Sicily during the conquest of the island from the Moors in the 1130s. Another notable figure was Guglielmo Phillippo, a 13th-century judge and diplomat who served under King Manfred of Sicily.

In the 15th century, a branch of the Phillippo family settled in the city of Naples, where they became prominent merchants and bankers. Giovanni Phillippo (1420-1489) was a wealthy Neapolitan banker who financed several expeditions to the New World and was granted a coat of arms by King Ferdinand I of Naples.

As the surname spread throughout Italy and Europe, it took on various spellings such as Filipo, Filippone, and Philippeau. One of the most famous bearers of the name was the Italian painter Santi di Tito (1536-1603), whose real name was Santi Phillippo.

Other notable individuals with the surname Phillippo include Antonio Phillippo (1670-1730), an Italian architect who designed several churches and palaces in Rome, and Domenico Phillippo (1789-1879), an Italian botanist and naturalist who studied the flora of Sicily.
