Neighbourhood profile for Tyrrel

Modern surname records can be compared with neighbourhood classifications. For Tyrrel, this points to the kinds of places where the surname is most concentrated today.

Meaning and origin of Tyrrel

The surname Tyrrel originated in Normandy, France in the 11th century. It is derived from the Old French word 'tirer', meaning 'to pull' or 'to draw', suggesting it may have been an occupational name for an archer or crossbowman. Variants of the spelling include Tirel, Tyrell, and Tyrrell.

The name first appeared in England after the Norman Conquest of 1066, when many Norman families settled in the country. One of the earliest recorded instances is in the Domesday Book of 1086, where a landowner named Walter Tirel is listed as holding estates in Essex and Wiltshire.

Sir Walter Tyrrel (c. 1095 – c. 1139) was a Norman nobleman infamous for accidentally killing King William II with an arrow while hunting in the New Forest in 1100. He fled to France after the incident but later returned to England.

Another notable figure was Thomas Tyrrell (c. 1594 – 1676), an English historian and writer who served as a clerk for the Parliament during the English Civil War. He is best known for his work 'The General History of England', published in 1696.

Sir John Tyrrell (1597 – 1673) was an English politician and member of Parliament who fought on the Parliamentarian side during the Civil War. He later served as Lord President of Munster in Ireland.

The surname Tyrrel is also linked to several English place names, including Tyrrell's Pass in Buckinghamshire and Tyrell's Ford in Wiltshire, suggesting the name was well-established in these areas.

In the United States, one of the earliest recorded instances of the name is Thomas Tyrrell (c. 1594 – 1672), who emigrated from England to Virginia in the 1620s and became a prominent landowner and member of the House of Burgesses.
