Where Dungeys are most common

Historical parish links are strongest around Bristol City: St Mary Redcliff, London parishes, St Ewe, St Austell and St Just. These are the places where the surname stands out most clearly in the older records.

The modern local-area list points to Cornwall, North Hertfordshire, Isle of Wight and Swale. Treat these as concentration signals, not proof that every family line began there.

Some modern areas include a three-digit suffix, such as Leeds 110. The suffix is a small-area code, so it stays in the table while the prose uses the plain place name.

Neighbourhood profile for Dungey

Modern surname records can be compared with neighbourhood classifications. For Dungey, this points to the kinds of places where the surname is most concentrated today.

These neighbourhood labels describe areas, not individual people. They are useful because surnames often cluster through family history, migration, housing patterns and local work. A surname can be strongest in one type of neighbourhood even when people with that name live across the country.

The UK classification gives the national picture. The London classification is more specific to the capital, where housing, age profile, tenure and population mix can look quite different from the rest of the UK.

Meaning and origin of Dungey

The surname Dungey is believed to have originated in England, where it first appeared in the 13th century. It is thought to be a locational name, derived from a place called Dungy in Nottinghamshire. The name is likely derived from the Old English words "dun" meaning hill or down, and "ey" meaning island or dry ground.

One of the earliest recorded instances of the name is found in the Rotuli Hundredorum, a census record from 1273, which lists a Richard de Dungey in Nottinghamshire. The Dungey family later spread to other parts of England, particularly to Yorkshire, where they established themselves as landowners and farmers.

In the 16th century, a branch of the Dungey family settled in the village of Wragby in Lincolnshire. A notable member of this family was John Dungey (1530-1592), who served as a constable and tax collector in the village.

Another early record of the name is found in the parish registers of St. Mary's Church in Nottingham, where a William Dungey was baptized in 1598. This church also contains a memorial to Thomas Dungey (1647-1721), a prosperous merchant who donated funds for the repair of the church.

During the English Civil War, a Captain Robert Dungey (1610-1679) fought on the Parliamentarian side and was present at the Battle of Naseby in 1645. His descendant, Sir William Dungey (1745-1823), was a successful lawyer and politician who served as a Member of Parliament for Derby.

In the 19th century, the Dungey family produced several notable figures, including Admiral Sir George Dungey (1809-1887), who served in the Royal Navy and was involved in the suppression of the slave trade in West Africa. Another prominent member was Sir Charles Dungey (1832-1905), a renowned architect who designed several notable buildings in London, including the Royal Albert Hall.

The name Dungey has also been associated with various place names in England, such as Dungey Marsh in Kent and Dungey Farm in Somerset. While not a common surname today, it remains a part of England's rich historical tapestry, reflecting the country's diverse linguistic and cultural heritage.
