Neighbourhood profile for Everet

Modern surname records can be compared with neighbourhood classifications. For Everet, this points to the kinds of places where the surname is most concentrated today.

These neighbourhood labels describe areas, not individual people. They are useful because surnames often cluster through family history, migration, housing patterns and local work. A surname can be strongest in one type of neighbourhood even when people with that name live across the country.

The UK classification gives the national picture. The London classification is more specific to the capital, where housing, age profile, tenure and population mix can look quite different from the rest of the UK.

Meaning and origin of Everet

The surname Everet originated in England during the medieval period. It is a variant spelling of the more common Everard, which is derived from the Germanic personal name Eberhard, meaning "brave boar." The surname first appeared in records in the 12th century, with early spellings including Everard, Evrard, and Evret.

One of the earliest known bearers of the name was Roger Everet, who was mentioned in the Pipe Rolls of Lincolnshire in 1195. The name also appears in the Hundredorum Rolls of 1273, which record individuals in various counties across England.

The Everet surname is closely associated with the county of Wiltshire, where it was particularly prevalent. In the 13th century, the name was recorded as Everard in the Assize Rolls of Wiltshire. The nearby village of Everett, now part of Dorset, may have contributed to the development of the surname spelling.

In the 14th century, the name appeared in the form of Everard in the Subsidy Rolls of Worcestershire in 1327. John Everard, a prominent figure from this era, was a Member of Parliament for Worcestershire in 1376.

During the 16th century, the spelling Everet became more common. One notable bearer was Richard Everet, a wealthy merchant and landowner from Wiltshire, who lived from 1510 to 1592.

The Everet surname also has connections to Northamptonshire, where it was recorded in the Visitation of Northamptonshire in 1564. In this record, the family traced their ancestry back to the reign of King John (1199-1216).

Another significant figure was Sir Edward Everet, a Member of Parliament for Northamptonshire who lived from 1570 to 1632. He served as a justice of the peace and was knighted by King James I in 1617.

In the 17th century, the Everet surname spread to other parts of England, as well as to the American colonies. In 1635, Richard Everet, born in 1600, immigrated to Massachusetts Bay Colony and settled in Dedham.

The Everet surname has a rich history in England, with roots dating back to the medieval period. While it has evolved over time, it has maintained a connection to its Germanic origins and has been borne by notable individuals throughout the centuries.
