Where Suddabys are most common

Historical parish links are strongest around Patrington, Hull Holy Trinity, Leeds, Drypool and Waltham. These are the places where the surname stands out most clearly in the older records.

The modern local-area list points to West Lindsey, Doncaster, North East Lincolnshire and Isle of Anglesey. Treat these as concentration signals, not proof that every family line began there.

Some modern areas include a three-digit suffix, such as Leeds 110. The suffix is a small-area code, so it stays in the table while the prose uses the plain place name.

Neighbourhood profile for Suddaby

Modern surname records can be compared with neighbourhood classifications. For Suddaby, this points to the kinds of places where the surname is most concentrated today.

These neighbourhood labels describe areas, not individual people. They are useful because surnames often cluster through family history, migration, housing patterns and local work. A surname can be strongest in one type of neighbourhood even when people with that name live across the country.

The UK classification gives the national picture. The London classification is more specific to the capital, where housing, age profile, tenure and population mix can look quite different from the rest of the UK.

Meaning and origin of Suddaby

The surname Suddaby is of English origin, originating in the northern English counties of Yorkshire and Durham. Its earliest recorded form dates back to the 13th century as "Sudabucc" or "Sudhebocc", derived from the Old English words "sud" meaning south and "boc" meaning a small river or stream. This suggests the name was initially a locational surname given to someone residing near a southern brook or stream.

One of the earliest recorded instances of the name can be found in the Yorkshire Poll Tax Rolls of 1379, where a John Sudbyry is listed. The Hundred Rolls of Lincolnshire from 1273 also mention a Roger de Sudbyri, indicating the name's presence in the East Midlands region during the Middle Ages.

The Suddaby name appears to have been concentrated in the North Riding of Yorkshire, particularly around the town of Stokesley. A notable early bearer was Thomas Suddaby (c.1520-1590), a landowner and yeoman farmer from Stokesley who left a detailed will outlining his possessions and bequests.

As the name spread across England, various spelling variations emerged, including Suddaby, Sudaby, Suddiby, and Suddyby. One prominent figure was Sir John Sudbury (c.1314-1381), a clergyman who served as Lord Chancellor of England and Archbishop of Canterbury before being brutally murdered during the Peasants' Revolt in 1381.

Another notable bearer was Sir Edwyn Sandys Suddaby (1837-1912), a British Army officer and recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest military honor for gallantry in the face of the enemy. He was awarded the VC for his actions during the Indian Mutiny in 1858.

Moving into the 20th century, George Suddaby (1898-1973) was a English professional footballer who played as a winger for several clubs, including Leeds United and Middlesbrough, in the 1920s and 1930s.

While the Suddaby surname is relatively uncommon today, it remains firmly rooted in its northern English origins, with a rich history spanning over seven centuries.
