Where Lownds' are most common

Historical parish links are strongest around St Alkmund, Alstonfield, Wolstanton, Cheadle and Stoke-on-Trent, Bucknell-cum-Bagnall, Caverswall. These are the places where the surname stands out most clearly in the older records.

The modern local-area list points to Staffordshire Moorlands, Tameside, Stoke-on-Trent and Nottingham. Treat these as concentration signals, not proof that every family line began there.

Some modern areas include a three-digit suffix, such as Leeds 110. The suffix is a small-area code, so it stays in the table while the prose uses the plain place name.

Neighbourhood profile for Lownds

Modern surname records can be compared with neighbourhood classifications. For Lownds, this points to the kinds of places where the surname is most concentrated today.

These neighbourhood labels describe areas, not individual people. They are useful because surnames often cluster through family history, migration, housing patterns and local work. A surname can be strongest in one type of neighbourhood even when people with that name live across the country.

The UK classification gives the national picture. The London classification is more specific to the capital, where housing, age profile, tenure and population mix can look quite different from the rest of the UK.

Group profile

Residents of these neighbourhoods typically live in households with dependent children, and there are fewer-than-average residents of normal retirement age or over. Identification with ethnic minorities, particularly Black, or Mixed or Multiple ethnicities is common. The rate of Christian religious affiliation is low. Housing predominantly consists of semi-detached houses, along with a significant number of terraced properties and flats. Overcrowded social housing is common, and private renting occurs at average UK levels. Those in employment work mainly in caring leisure and other services; process, plant and machine operation; or elementary occupations. Unemployment is high, and few individuals have degree level qualifications. Many of these neighbourhoods occur in commuter towns or less accessible areas of larger towns and cities.

Wider pattern

This Supergroup exemplifies the broad base to the UK’s social structure, encompassing as it does the average or modal levels of many neighbourhood characteristics, including all housing tenures, a range of levels of educational attainment and religious affiliations, and a variety of pre-retirement age structures. Yet, in combination, these mixes are each distinctive of the parts of the UK. Overall, terraced houses and flats are the most prevalent, as is employment in intermediate or low-skilled occupations. However, this Supergroup is also characterised by above average levels of unemployment and lower levels of use of English as the main language. Many neighbourhoods occur in south London and the UK’s other major urban centres.

Meaning and origin of Lownds

The surname Lownds is an English locational name derived from the place name Lowndes, which is found in Cheshire and Lancashire. The name likely originated in these areas during the 12th or 13th century. It is believed to be derived from the Old English words "hlaw" meaning a hill or mound and "innis" meaning a meadow or pasture, essentially meaning "the meadow on the hill."

Some early recordings of the name include John del Loundes, listed in the Assize Rolls of Lancashire in 1285, and Adam del Lowndes, mentioned in the Subsidy Rolls of Cheshire in 1327. The name also appears in the Wills at Chester, with Richard Lowndes being recorded in 1591.

The Lownds family can trace their ancestry to William Lowndes, a merchant from Lancashire who lived in the early 17th century. One of his descendants, William Lowndes, was a prominent English politician and Secretary to the Treasury from 1695 to 1708.

Another notable figure was Thomas Lowndes, born in 1692, who served as the Secretary of the Treasury from 1724 to 1737. He was also a Member of Parliament for several constituencies and played a significant role in shaping the financial policies of the time.

In the 18th century, Rawlins Lowndes, born in 1721, was a successful lawyer and served as the President of the South Carolina Court of Common Pleas from 1768 to 1776. He was also a member of the Continental Congress during the American Revolutionary War.

The name Lowndes can also be found in various place names, such as Lowndes County in Georgia, which was named after William Lowndes, the prominent politician mentioned earlier. Additionally, there is a Lowndes County in Mississippi and a town called Lowndesboro in Alabama, both named after the same individual.

Throughout history, several individuals with the surname Lownds have made significant contributions in various fields, including politics, law, and finance, further cementing the importance of this English locational name.
