Neighbourhood profile for Hidden

Modern surname records can be compared with neighbourhood classifications. For Hidden, this points to the kinds of places where the surname is most concentrated today.

These neighbourhood labels describe areas, not individual people. They are useful because surnames often cluster through family history, migration, housing patterns and local work. A surname can be strongest in one type of neighbourhood even when people with that name live across the country.

The UK classification gives the national picture. The London classification is more specific to the capital, where housing, age profile, tenure and population mix can look quite different from the rest of the UK.

Meaning and origin of Hidden

The surname HIDDEN originated in the Netherlands in the 16th century. It is derived from the Dutch word "heiden," which means "heathen" or "pagan." The name was likely given to someone who lived in a remote or rural area where pagan beliefs persisted after the spread of Christianity.

In the early 1600s, the surname HIDDEN appeared in records from the Dutch province of Friesland. One of the earliest recorded instances is a man named Jurgen HIDDEN, born in 1612 in the village of Hindeloopen. He was a farmer and fisherman who lived near the Wadden Sea.

As the Dutch colonial empire expanded in the 17th century, some individuals with the surname HIDDEN immigrated to Dutch settlements in the Americas and other parts of the world. In 1645, a man named Pieter HIDDEN was among the early settlers of New Amsterdam, which later became New York City.

In the 18th century, the HIDDEN surname appeared in various parts of Europe. In 1734, a German philosopher named Johann Gottfried HIDDEN was born in the town of Erfurt. He wrote several treatises on ethics and morality. Another notable figure was the Dutch artist Jacob HIDDEN (1783-1859), who was known for his landscape paintings.

During the 19th century, the HIDDEN surname spread further across Europe and beyond. In England, a prominent figure was Sir Edward HIDDEN (1816-1892), a politician and lawyer who served as Lord Chancellor of Great Britain. In Australia, one of the earliest recorded instances of the name was William HIDDEN (1828-1901), a farmer and landowner in the state of Victoria.

Other notable individuals with the surname HIDDEN include the American poet Robert HIDDEN (1892-1964), the French composer Claude HIDDEN (1924-2016), and the German actress Hanna HIDDEN (born 1945), who starred in several films in the 1960s and 1970s.
