Neighbourhood profile for Jewitt

Modern surname records can be compared with neighbourhood classifications. For Jewitt, this points to the kinds of places where the surname is most concentrated today.

These neighbourhood labels describe areas, not individual people. They are useful because surnames often cluster through family history, migration, housing patterns and local work. A surname can be strongest in one type of neighbourhood even when people with that name live across the country.

The UK classification gives the national picture. The London classification is more specific to the capital, where housing, age profile, tenure and population mix can look quite different from the rest of the UK.

Meaning and origin of Jewitt

The surname Jewitt has its origins in England, with records dating back to the 13th century. It is believed to be derived from the Old French personal name "Juwet," which itself may have been a diminutive form of the name "Judde" or "Jude." Alternatively, it could be linked to the medieval given name "Juette," a feminine form of the Hebrew name "Judah."

In medieval times, the name appeared in various spellings, including Juwet, Juwett, Jeweyt, and Juwyte. One of the earliest recorded instances is found in the Hundredorum Rolls of Lincolnshire from 1273, where a person named Roger Juwet is mentioned.

The Jewitt surname was particularly prevalent in the counties of Yorkshire and Derbyshire in northern England. In the 14th century, the Poll Tax Returns of Yorkshire from 1379 list a John Juwet and a William Juwyt. Additionally, the Subsidy Rolls of Derbyshire from 1327 include references to a Henry Juwet and a Robert Juwet.

Notably, the Jewitt surname appeared in the famous Domesday Book of 1086, which was a record of landowners and properties commissioned by William the Conqueror after the Norman conquest of England. However, the exact spelling or reference to the name in this historical document is not widely documented.

Throughout history, several individuals with the Jewitt surname have made their mark. One notable figure was Edward Jewitt (1612-1671), an English Puritan and nonconformist preacher who served as the minister of St. Olave's Church in London during the 17th century.

Another prominent individual was Llewellynn Frederick William Jewitt (1816-1886), an English antiquarian and writer who authored numerous works on archaeology, folklore, and local history. He was also a founding member of the British Archaeological Association.

In the 19th century, Eliza Jeffreys Jewitt (1819-1897) gained recognition as an English author and painter. She wrote several books on ceramics and pottery, including "The Ceramic Art of Great Britain" and "The Wedgwoods: Being a Life of that Illustrious Family."

Additionally, there was John Jewitt (1783-1821), an English blacksmith and adventurer who was captured by the Nuu-chah-nulth people on the west coast of Vancouver Island. His memoir, "A Narrative of the Adventures and Sufferings of John R. Jewitt," provided valuable insights into the culture and customs of the indigenous people.

Another notable figure was Walter Jewitt (1856-1939), an English architect who worked extensively in the Arts and Crafts style. He designed several notable buildings, including the Church of St. John the Divine in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada.
