Neighbourhood profile for Jopling

Modern surname records can be compared with neighbourhood classifications. For Jopling, this points to the kinds of places where the surname is most concentrated today.

These neighbourhood labels describe areas, not individual people. They are useful because surnames often cluster through family history, migration, housing patterns and local work. A surname can be strongest in one type of neighbourhood even when people with that name live across the country.

The UK classification gives the national picture. The London classification is more specific to the capital, where housing, age profile, tenure and population mix can look quite different from the rest of the UK.

Predominantly UK-born, residents typically live in detached houses, although others do live in semi-detached and terraced properties. Many concentrations occur in high amenity rural locations, such as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Wider pattern

Pervasive throughout the UK, members of this Supergroup typically own (or are buying) their detached, semi-detached or terraced homes. They are also typically educated to A Level/Highers or degree level and work in skilled or professional occupations. Typically born in the UK, some families have children, although the median adult age is above 45 and some property has become under-occupied after children have left home. This Supergroup is pervasive not only in suburban locations, but also in neighbourhoods at or beyond the edge of cities that adjoin rural parts of the country.

Meaning and origin of Jopling

The surname Jopling originated in England, likely appearing as early as the 12th century. It is derived from the Old English personal name "Ioplind," which means "violet linden tree." This name was often given to children born near a particularly vibrant linden tree.

The earliest known record of the Jopling surname appears in the Sussex Subsidy Rolls of 1296, where a Walter Joplynge is listed as a taxpayer. This suggests the name was well-established in the southern English county of Sussex by the late 13th century.

In the 14th century, the Jopling name appears in various manorial records across southern England, with spellings like "Jopeling," "Jopelyn," and "Jopelyng." A John Jopeling is recorded as a landholder in Wiltshire in 1327.

The famous Domesday Book, compiled in 1086 after the Norman conquest of England, does not contain the Jopling surname. However, it does list several places with names derived from the Old English words "iop" and "lind," lending credence to the name's proposed etymology.

One of the earliest known people of note with the Jopling surname was Sir Thomas Jopling (c.1475-1542), a wealthy merchant and alderman in the city of York. He served as Lord Mayor of York in 1516 and 1533.

During the English Civil War in the 17th century, a Royalist officer named Captain Ralph Jopling (c.1610-1666) fought for King Charles I. He was captured at the Battle of Naseby in 1645 and later pardoned by Oliver Cromwell.

The 18th century saw the birth of Robert Jopling (1768-1842), an esteemed English portrait painter. His works can be found in the National Portrait Gallery in London and other major collections.

In the 19th century, Joseph Middleton Jopling (1825-1865) was a notable British journalist and author. He founded the York Herald newspaper and wrote several books on Yorkshire history and culture.

More recently, Dame Patricia Jopling (1914-2008) was a British Conservative politician who served as a Member of Parliament from 1964 to 1974. She held several ministerial positions in the government of Prime Minister Edward Heath.
