Where Maules are most common

Historical parish links are strongest around Bristol City: St Mary Redcliff, London parishes, Edinburgh, Bloxham and Glasgow. These are the places where the surname stands out most clearly in the older records.

The modern local-area list points to County Durham, Bath and North East Somerset, Stroud, Stratford-on-Avon and Rushcliffe. Treat these as concentration signals, not proof that every family line began there.

Some modern areas include a three-digit suffix, such as Leeds 110. The suffix is a small-area code, so it stays in the table while the prose uses the plain place name.

Neighbourhood profile for Maule

Modern surname records can be compared with neighbourhood classifications. For Maule, this points to the kinds of places where the surname is most concentrated today.

These neighbourhood labels describe areas, not individual people. They are useful because surnames often cluster through family history, migration, housing patterns and local work. A surname can be strongest in one type of neighbourhood even when people with that name live across the country.

The UK classification gives the national picture. The London classification is more specific to the capital, where housing, age profile, tenure and population mix can look quite different from the rest of the UK.

Meaning and origin of Maule

The surname Maule originated in the region of Normandy in northern France. It is derived from the Old French word "male," meaning "chest" or "trunk," and was likely an occupational name for a maker of chests or trunks.

The name can be traced back to the early Middle Ages, and it is believed that the Maule family was among the Norman nobility who accompanied William the Conqueror to England during the Norman Conquest of 1066. The name is listed in the Domesday Book, a comprehensive survey of land ownership and wealth commissioned by William the Conqueror in 1086.

One of the earliest recorded instances of the name dates back to the 11th century, with William de Maule, a Norman knight who fought alongside William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. His descendants went on to establish themselves as prominent landowners in Yorkshire and Northumberland.

Another notable figure with the surname Maule was Sir Thomas Maule (c. 1370-1451), a Scottish nobleman and diplomat who served as the ambassador to France during the reign of King James I. He was also known for his involvement in the negotiations that led to the release of King James I from English captivity in 1424.

In the 16th century, Patrick Maule (c. 1510-1579) was a Scottish clergyman and the first Protestant minister of the parish of Panmure in Angus. He played a crucial role in the Scottish Reformation and was a supporter of John Knox.

In the 17th century, Henry Maule (1618-1677) was a Scottish lawyer and statesman who served as the Lord Privy Seal of Scotland and was a member of the Scottish Parliament. He was also a prominent figure during the Scottish Civil War and supported the Royalist cause.

Another notable figure with the surname Maule was George Maule (1718-1786), a British soldier and politician who served as the Governor of Madras in India from 1776 to 1780. He was also a Member of Parliament for the constituency of Arundel in Sussex.
